Khon Kaen is a city located in northeastern Thailand and serves as the capital of Khon Kaen province. It holds the distinction of being the fourth-largest city in the country.
The city is recognized as one of the "big four" major cities of Isan, the region commonly known as Northeast Thailand. The other three primary cities in this group are Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Ubon Ratchathani.
