Si Satchanalai, historically known as Chaliang or Sawankhalok, was a political entity located in the upper Chao Phraya Valley of central Thailand. The region was established in the early 600s through the unification of four regional chiefdoms. During its early history, it functioned as part of the Dvaravati's Lavo.
The site gained historical recognition in Chinese records, where it was referred to as the independent kingdom Chéng Liáng in the Song Shi text of 1001. Additionally, the term San-lo mentioned in the Lingwai Daida in 1178 is believed to refer to Sawankhalok, which served as a new center for the region.
