Mae Wang is a district (amphoe) located in the central part of Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand. Its largest settlement and administrative seat is Ban Kad, which serves as a satellite town of Chiang Mai.
The region is notable for its high concentration of ethnic Hill Tribe people compared to other parts of Thailand. While Thai people are more common in the lowlands near Ban Kad, ethnic minorities become more prevalent at higher elevations on the western slopes of Doi Inthanon. The district's population includes significant groups such as the Karen, Hmong, and Akha peoples. Specifically, villages past Mae Sa Pok on Rural Road 1013 are almost exclusively inhabited by the Karen people, with the Hmong residing in the higher elevations.
