Chiang Mai is the largest city in northern Thailand and serves as the capital of Chiang Mai province. It ranks as the second-largest city in Thailand by urban population, with an urban population of approximately 1.2 million as of 2023.

Located in a mountainous region known as the Thai highlands, the city is situated roughly 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok. The city municipality itself has a population of about 127,000 residents.
