Al-Hamidiyah is a coastal town located in Syria. It was established rapidly around 1897 following direct orders from Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamit II. The settlement was created to serve as a refuge for the Greek-speaking Muslim Cretan community, who were forced to leave Crete during the Greco-Turkish War of 1897–98.
The town is characterized by its distinct cultural heritage, as the majority of its residents continue to speak Cretan Greek in their daily lives. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, the population of Al-Hamidiyah was recorded at 7,404 during the 2004 census.
