Homs is a city situated in western Syria and serves as the capital of the Homs Governorate. Historically known as Emesa during pre-Islamic times, it is located at an elevation of 501 meters (1,644 feet) above sea level.
The city is positioned approximately 162 kilometers (101 miles) north of Damascus along the Orontes River. Due to its geographical location, Homs functions as a central link connecting the interior cities with the Mediterranean coast.
