Aleppo is a major city located in northern Syria. It serves as the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, which is the most populous governorate in the country.
As of 2021, the city had an estimated population of 2,098,000 residents. While Damascus is currently the largest city by population, Aleppo remains Syria's largest city by urban area. It is also recognized as the largest city in Syria's northern governorates and one of the largest cities in the Levant region.
