Hajin is a small city located in eastern Syria within the Deir ez-Zor Governorate. Situated along the Euphrates River south of Deir ez-Zor, it serves as the administrative center of a subdistrict (nahiyah) in the Abu Kamal District. The surrounding area includes nearby localities such as al-Abbas to the west, al-Ramadi to the south, and Gharanij to the north.
According to the 2004 census conducted by the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, Hajin had a population of 37,935. The subdistrict it anchors consists of four towns with a collective population of 97,970. The al-Shaitat tribe is identified as the largest tribe in this region.
The city saw significant military activity starting in 2014 when it was captured by the Islamic State. Control shifted to the Syrian Democratic Forces on December 14, 2018, following a period of heavy clashes and intense airstrikes by the United States-led Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve international coalition. Hajin has since been part of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.
