Al-Tabqa is a city located in Syria, situated near the Euphrates Dam. The dam, also known as the Tabqa Dam or al-Thawra Dam, is an embankment structure located 40 kilometres upstream from the city of Raqqa in the Raqqa Governorate.
Constructed between 1968 and 1973 with assistance from the Soviet Union, the dam is the largest in Syria. It stands 60 metres high and 4.5 kilometres long. The construction of the dam resulted in the creation of Euphrates Lake, which serves as Syria's largest water reservoir.
The facility was originally designed to provide irrigation for lands on both sides of the Euphrates River and to generate hydroelectric power. While it has not reached its full potential in either objective, its construction necessitated an international effort to excavate and document archaeological remains before they were flooded by the rising waters of the lake.
