Qamishli is a city located in northeastern Syria on the border with Turkey, where it adjoins the city of Nusaybin. Situated approximately 680 kilometres northeast of Damascus, the city is notable for being situated along the Jaghjagh River.
As of a 2004 census, Qamishli had a population of 184,231, making it the ninth most-populous city in Syria and the second-largest city in the Al-Hasakah Governorate. While historically a Christian Assyrian majority city, the current population is predominantly Kurdish with significant numbers of Arabs and Assyrians, as well as a smaller Armenian minority.
