Izalco

El Salvador

Izalco is a town and municipality located in the Sonsonate department of El Salvador. It is situated on the flank of the Santa Ana volcano.

The area is primarily known for Volcán Izalco, an iconic and geologically young volcano in the country. From its birth in 1770 until 1966, the volcano remained in almost continuous eruption, earning it the nickname "lighthouse of the Pacific." Since 1966, the volcano has been nearly inactive.
