San Francisco, officially known as the City and County of San Francisco, is a major city located in California. It currently ranks as the fourth-most populous city in the state and the 17th-most populous city in the United States, with a population of 826,079 as of 2025.
The city is notable for its high economic indicators; among U.S. cities with a population of at least 200,000, it ranks first in per capita income and sixth in aggregate income as of 2024. It also ranks third in population density within that same category.
The San Francisco metropolitan statistical area has approximately 4.6 million residents, making it the 13th-largest in the country. When combined with the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland region, it forms the fifth-largest combined statistical area in the United States, housing roughly 9.2 million people.
