Woke

South Sudan

Woke is a city located in South Sudan. However, it is important to note that "woke" is also widely recognized as an adjective derived from African-American English. Historically used since at least the 1930s, the term originally referred to an awareness of racial prejudice and discrimination.

The term gained significant political connotations by the 1970s and saw a surge in popularity during the 2010s with the hashtag #staywoke. In contemporary usage, it often refers to a broader awareness of social inequalities, including sexism and the denial of LGBTQ rights, as well as concepts related to identity politics and social justice.
