Berbera is the capital city of the Sahil region in Somaliland, located in the Woqooyi Galbeed region of Somalia. It serves as the primary seaport for the country and is situated approximately 160 kilometers from Hargeisa, the national capital.
Historically, Berbera served as a major port for the Ifat, Adal, and Isaaq sultanates between the 13th and 19th centuries. It also functioned as the former capital of the British Somaliland protectorate before that role was transferred to Hargeisa.
