Afgooye is a town located in the southeastern Lower Shebelle region of Somalia. Situated approximately 30 kilometers north of Mogadishu, it serves as the center of the Afgooye District and ranks as the third largest city in the Southwest State. It is recognized as one of the oldest towns along the lower Shebelle valley.
Historically, Afgooye served as a trade center for the Silcis Dynasty during the medieval period before falling under Ajuran rule. By the late 17th century, it became the capital of the Geledi Sultanate. The town is also home to Lafoole College, Somalia's first college of education, which was constructed on the site of the 1896 Battle of Lafoole.
The city is known for its cultural traditions, specifically the Istunka. This annual "stick fight" carnival is held in the riverine region to commemorate the New Year.
