Banská Bystrica is a city located in central Slovakia on the Hron River. It sits within a wide valley surrounded by the mountain chains of the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. With a population of approximately 76,000 inhabitants, it serves as the capital of both the Banská Bystrica Region (kraj) and the district (okres), ranking as the sixth most populous municipality in the country.
The town was originally built upon a Slavic/Slovak/Avar settlement before being settled by German migrants invited by Hungarian kings during the Middle Ages. In 1255, it was granted municipal privileges as a free royal town of the Kingdom of Hungary. Historically known as a copper mining town, Banská Bystrica developed its distinctive architectural character in the late Middle Ages as prosperous burghers constructed central churches, mansions, and fortifications.
Today, the city is home to Matej Bel University and serves as a prominent tourist destination for both summer and winter activities due to its historical significance and proximity to the surrounding mountains.
