Olonkinbyen is the only settlement located on the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen. It serves as a remote outpost within the Arctic region.
The location was named in honor of Gennady Olonkin, a Russian-Norwegian explorer who participated in various Arctic expeditions. Olonkin served on Jan Mayen during several periods between 1928 and 1936.
