Longyearbyen is a settlement located on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the island with the broadest inlet in Svalbard. It serves as the capital and largest settled area of Svalbard, situated along the shore of Adventfjorden at the foot of the left bank of the Longyear Valley. As one of the world's northernmost settlements, it has an estimated population of approximately 2,400 to 2,800 residents.
The town functions as an official Norwegian municipality under the Longyearbyen Community Council, which was established in 2002. It serves as the seat of the Governor of Svalbard and is currently led by Mayor Leif Terje Aunevik.
