Šmarje pri Jelšah is a town located in eastern Slovenia. It serves as the administrative seat of the Municipality of Šmarje pri Jelšah and is situated within the Savinja Statistical Region.
The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. The historical development of the settlement is notably associated with Jelšingrad, a medieval mansion located on a slight hill northwest of the town.
