Idrija is a town located in western Slovenia and serves as the seat of the Municipality of Idrija. It gained international recognition in 2011 when it was awarded the title of Alpine Town of the Year.
The town is primarily notable for its mercury mine, which includes preserved stores, infrastructure, miners' living quarters, and a dedicated miners' theatre. In 2012, the site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Spanish mine at Almadén. Additionally, Idrija is known for Idrija Lace, a specific type of bobbin tape lace that holds a protected geographical indication by the Slovenian Intellectual Property Office.
