Vänersborg is a locality and the seat of Vänersborg Municipality in Sweden. It is situated within the Västra Götaland County on the southern shores of Lake Vänern, specifically near the point where the river Göta älv flows out of the lake.

The city has served as an important administrative center for the region. Until 1997, it was the capital of Älvsborg County before that county merged into Västra Götaland County. Since 1999, Vänersborg has functioned as the seat of the regional council for Region Västra Götaland. As of recent data, the locality has a population of 23,882 inhabitants.
