Kalix is a locality situated in Norrbotten County, Sweden. It serves as the administrative seat of the Kalix Municipality. The name of the city is believed to be derived from the Sami word Gáláseatnu, or "Kalasätno," which translates to "The cold river," referring to the ancient name of the Kalix River.

As of 2005, the locality had a population of 7,299 residents. This figure represents approximately 42% of the total population of the broader Kalix Municipality, which recorded 17,300 inhabitants during the same period.
