Visby is an urban area located on the island of Gotland in Gotland County, Sweden. It serves as the seat of the Gotland Municipality and is the episcopal see for the Diocese of Visby. As of 2017, the city had a population of 24,330 inhabitants.
The city is recognized as one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Scandinavia and has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 1995. Its historical layout features small decorative alleyways, numerous church ruins, and a town wall that encircles the center, measuring approximately 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) in length.
Visby was historically a prominent Hanseatic city. The decline of its role within the Hanseatic league during the Late Middle Ages contributed to the preservation of many stone houses, which remain in their original medieval style today.
