The Abyei Special Administrative Area is a region located on the border between Sudan and South Sudan. Covering an area of 10,546 km2 (4,072 sq mi), it was granted special administrative status under the 2004 Protocol on the Resolution of the Abyei Conflict. This protocol was part of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that concluded the Second Sudanese Civil War.
Abyei Town serves as the capital of the region. Under the terms of the Abyei Protocol, the area is considered to be simultaneously part of both the Republic of South Sudan and the Republic of Sudan on an interim basis, functioning effectively as a condominium.
