New Halfa is a city located in Sudan. It was established as part of the New Halfa Project, a 164,000 feddan site constructed in 1964. The settlement was created to house 50,000 Nubians who were displaced from Wadi Halfa, a town on the Nile near the Egyptian border that was flooded during the formation of Lake Nasser behind the Aswan Dam.
The area serves as an irrigation project designed to transition local nomads into farmers specializing in cotton and sugar production. The site draws its water supply from the Atbara River, utilizing the Khashm el Girba Dam as a reliable source for the region's agricultural needs.
