Norilsk is an industrial closed city located in the Krasnoyarsk Krai region of Russia. It is situated south of the western Taymyr Peninsula, approximately 90 km east of the Yenisey River and 1,500 km north of Krasnoyarsk. The city sits 300 km north of the Arctic Circle and 2,400 km from the North Pole.
As of 2024, Norilsk has a permanent population of 176,735, which can rise to 220,000 when including temporary inhabitants. It serves as the second-largest city in its region after Krasnoyarsk and holds the distinction of being the world's northernmost city with more than 175,000 residents. Additionally, it is the second-largest city located inside the Arctic Circle and one of only two large cities situated within the continuous permafrost zone.
