The city is an important junction for the Trans-Siberian Railway and stands as one of Russia's largest producers of aluminum. It also functions as a significant educational center in Siberia, hosting the Siberian Federal University. In 2019, Krasnoyarsk served as the host city for the Winter Universiade.
Krasnoyarsk is noted for its natural landscape, with author Anton Chekhov once describing it as the most beautiful city in Siberia. The Stolby Nature Sanctuary is situated approximately 10 km south of the city limits.
