The term ocher also refers to a family of natural clay earth pigments composed of ferric oxide, sand, and clay. These pigments range in color from yellow to deep orange or brown, with the name frequently used to describe the resulting light brownish-yellow hues.
A specific variant containing high amounts of hematite, or dehydrated iron oxide, is known as red ochre. Additionally, the term is colloquially applied to various substances used for color in Aboriginal Australian art and ceremonial decoration, such as white ochre or pipe clay derived from kaolin or gypsum.
