Yekaterinburg, also romanized as Ekaterinburg, is a major city in Russia located on the Iset River. Situated between the Volga-Ural region and Siberia, it serves as the administrative center for both Sverdlovsk Oblast and the Ural Federal District. The city was formerly known as Sverdlovsk from 1924 to 1991.
With a population of approximately 1.5 million residents—reaching up to 2.2 million in its urban agglomeration—Yekaterinburg is the fourth most populous city in Russia and the largest in the Ural Federal District. It is recognized as one of the country's primary industrial and cultural centers, often referred to as the "third capital of Russia" due to its ranking third behind Moscow and Saint Petersburg in terms of economy, culture, transportation, and tourism.
