Velizh is a town located in the Smolensk Oblast of Russia. It serves as the administrative center of the Velizhsky District and is situated on the bank of the Western Dvina river.
The town is positioned approximately 134 kilometers (83 miles) from Smolensk, which is the administrative center of the oblast. According to census data, the population was recorded at 7,620 in 2010, following previous counts of 8,343 in 2002 and 9,146 in 1989.
