Atkarsk is a town located in the Saratov Oblast of Russia. It is situated at the confluence of the Atkara and Medveditsa Rivers, approximately 92 kilometers (57 miles) northwest of Saratov, which serves as the administrative center of the oblast.
According to census data, the population of the town has fluctuated over recent decades. The 1989 Soviet census recorded a population of 28,877, while the 2002 census reported 27,907 residents. By the 2010 census, the population was recorded at 25,624.
