Kronstadt is a Russian port city situated in the Kronshtadtsky District of the federal city of Saint Petersburg. It is located on Kotlin Island, approximately 30 km (19 mi) west of Saint Petersburg near the head of the Gulf of Finland.
The city is connected to the former Russian capital via the St Petersburg Dam. This structure serves as a combination levee-causeway-seagate that functions as part of the city's flood defenses while providing road access from the mainland to Kotlin Island.
