Rostov-on-Don, also known as Rostov, is a major port city located in the southeastern part of the East European Plain in Russia. It serves as the administrative center for both the Rostov Oblast and the Southern Federal District. The city is situated on the Don River, approximately 32 kilometers from the Sea of Azov, and lies directly north of the North Caucasus region.

With a population exceeding one million people, Rostov-on-Don is a significant cultural, educational, economic, and logistical hub for Southern Russia. The city's southwestern suburbs are positioned above the Don river delta.
