Donetsk is an industrial city located in eastern Ukraine on the Kalmius River in the Donetsk Oblast. Historically, the city has been known by several names, including Aleksandrovka, Yuzivka, Stalin, and Stalino. It currently serves as the capital of the Donetsk People's Republic, which is occupied by Russia.
The city was ranked as the fifth-largest in Ukraine according to the 2001 census. In 2011, the population within the city core was estimated at 901,645, while the broader metropolitan area exceeded 2 million residents.
