Shimsk is an urban locality and the administrative center of the Shimsky District in the Novgorod Oblast of Russia. It serves as the sole urban settlement within the district and is incorporated municipally as the Shimskoye Urban Settlement.
The city is situated on a highway that connects Veliky Novgorod and Pskov, located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of Veliky Novgorod. Geographically, it lies along the Shelon River, about 10 kilometers upstream from its drainage point into Lake Ilmen.
According to census data, the population of Shimsk has remained relatively stable over recent decades. The 2010 census recorded a population of 3,895 residents, following figures of 3,842 in 2002 and 3,992 during the 1989 Soviet census.
