In an archaeological context, a kurgan is a type of tumulus constructed over a grave. These structures are often characterized by containing a single human body accompanied by grave vessels, weapons, and horses. Originally utilized on the Pontic–Caspian steppe, kurgans spread across much of Central Asia and into Eastern, Southeast, Western, and Northern Europe during the third millennium BC.
