Derbent is a city located in Russia and serves as the southernmost city in the country. It is situated along the southeastern coast of the Republic of Dagestan, occupying a narrow gateway between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. Geographically, the city connects the Eurasian Steppe to the north with the Iranian Plateau to the south.
Historically known by names such as Darband or Derbend, the city covers an area of 69.63 square kilometres (26.88 mi2). It currently has a population of approximately 120,000 residents.
