Kyakhta is a town located in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia. It serves as the administrative center of the Kyakhtinsky District and is situated on the banks of the Kyakhta River near the border with Mongolia. The town sits directly opposite the Mongolian border town of Altanbulag.
Historically, Kyakhta served as a significant commercial hub, functioning as the primary border crossing for trade between Russia and China starting in 1727. According to census data, the population of the town was 20,041 in 2010, following previous counts of 18,391 in 2002 and 18,307 in 1989.
