Astrakhan is the largest city and administrative center of the Astrakhan Oblast located in southern Russia. Situated on two banks of the Volga River in the upper part of the Volga Delta, the city sits across eleven islands within the Caspian Depression. It is positioned approximately 100 km (62 mi) from the Caspian Sea.

The city has a population of 475,629 residents as of the 2021 Census. Notably, Astrakhan is the lowest city in Russia, situated at an elevation of 28 meters (92 ft) below sea level.
