A župa, also referred to as zhupa, is a historical administrative division that originated in medieval South Slavic culture. The term is commonly translated into English as "county" or "parish."
First mentioned in the eighth century, these territorial units were initially utilized by the South and West Slavs. Each župa was governed by a leader known as a župan.
