Novi Sad is the second-largest city in Serbia and serves as the administrative center of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. It is situated in the southern portion of the Pannonian Plain, positioned on the border of the Bačka and Syrmia geographical regions along the banks of the Danube river. The city faces the northern slopes of Fruška Gora.
The city is notable for being the fifth largest city on the Danube river and the largest city in the country that is not a national capital. According to the 2022 census, the population of Novi Sad city proper is 260,438, while its contiguous urban area contains 325,511 inhabitants and its administrative area totals 372,136 people.
