Mihail Kogălniceanu was a prominent Romanian liberal statesman, lawyer, historian, and publicist who served as one of the most influential intellectuals of his generation. He held several high-ranking government positions, including serving as Prime Minister of Romania in 1863 following the union of the Danubian Principalities. Additionally, he served as Foreign Minister under Carol I and held multiple terms as Interior Minister under both Alexandru Ioan Cuza and Carol I.
A polymath with a diverse career, Kogălniceanu was involved in theater management, academia, and journalism. He served as the head of the Iași Theater and was a professor at Academia Mihăileană. He also edited the influential magazine Dacia Literară and collaborated on various publications with figures such as Vasile Alecsandri and Ion Ghica. His political legacy includes his role as an ideologue for the 1848 Moldavian Revolution, where he authored the primary document, Dorințele partidei naționale din Moldova.
