Timișoara, officially known as the Municipality of Timișoara, is the capital city of Timiș County and the primary economic, social, and cultural center of western Romania. Situated on the Bega River, it serves as the informal capital of the historical Banat region. Historically, the city served as the capital of the Serbian Vojvodina and the Voivodeship of Serbia and Banat of Temeschwar between 1848 and 1860.
As of the 2021 census, Timișoara is Romania's fifth most populous city with 250,849 inhabitants. Its metropolitan area houses approximately 400,000 people, and it forms part of a larger metropolis with Arad that concentrates over 70% of the population in both counties. The city is characterized by its multicultural identity, hosting 21 ethnic groups and 18 religious denominations, including significant historical populations of Swabian Germans, Jews, and Hungarians.
