Sibiu is a city located in central Romania within the historical region of Transylvania. It is situated approximately 275 km (171 mi) northwest of Bucharest and straddles the Cibin River, which is a tributary of the Olt River.

Historically, Sibiu served as the capital of the Principality of Transylvania between 1692 and 1791, as well as from 1849 to 1865. It currently serves as the seat of Sibiu County. The city was also home to the Transylvanian Saxon University until 1876, with its seat located in the Hecht house.
