The city has a history dating back to the Middle Ages; it was mentioned in the Gesta Hungarorum as castrum Zotmar. In the modern era, Satu Mare serves as an academic, cultural, industrial, and business center within the Nord-Vest development region. As of 2021, the city has a population of 91,520.
