Drobeta-Turnu Severin, often referred to colloquially as Severin, is a city located in Mehedinți County within the Oltenia region of Romania. It is situated on the northern bank of the Danube River, positioned near the Iron Gates. The city serves as one of six Romanian county seats located along the Danube.
The name "Drobeta" refers to the ancient Dacian and Roman towns that occupied the site in antiquity. The modern designation of Turnu Severin was joined with Drobeta during the national-communist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu as part of his historical myth-making efforts.
