Motru is a city located in Gorj County, Romania. It is situated in the western region of Oltenia along the river Motru and its tributary, the river Ploștina.
The city serves as an administrative center for eight surrounding villages: Dealu Pomilor, Horăști, Însurăței, Leurda, Lupoița, Ploștina, Roșiuța, and Râpa. The county capital, Târgu Jiu, is located approximately 35 km (22 mi) to the northeast of Motru.
