Mehadia is a small market town and commune situated in the Banat region of Caraș-Severin County, Romania. Located within the Cerna River valley, the town sits along the European route E70. It was established on the site of the ancient Roman colony known as Ad Mediam, which was historically noted for its Hercules baths.
The population of Mehadia has fluctuated over time due to significant environmental factors, specifically major flooding in the river valley. While the town recorded a population of 4,118 in 2011, it decreased to 3,512 by 2021. Historical records indicate devastating floods in 1838 and 1841, which destroyed approximately 2,000 houses, while more recent major flooding events occurred in May 2005 and September 2014.
