Pedro Juan Caballero is a city located in Paraguay. It was named in honor of Pedro Juan Caballero de Añazco y García de Otazú, a prominent figure in the country's independence movement.
The namesake was born in Tobatí, a town in the Cordillera Department that was then part of the Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. He served as a major leader during the Revolution of May 14, 1811, despite being significantly younger than other primary leaders of the independence period. Following an accusation of involvement in a conspiracy against José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia in 1820, he committed suicide in his cell on July 13, 1821.
