Ponta Delgada is the largest municipality and executive capital of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in Portugal. It is situated on São Miguel Island, which serves as the most populous and largest island within the archipelago. The city covers an area of 232.99 square kilometres and had a population of 67,287 as of 2021.
The historical core of the city is composed of three central civil parishes: São Pedro, São Sebastião, and São José, which house 17,629 residents. While Ponta Delgada serves as the administrative capital following the revised constitution of 1976, other regional functions remain elsewhere; the judiciary and Catholic See are located in Angra do Heroísmo, while the Legislative Assembly of the Azores is based in Horta.
